Double Dovetailed Trinket Box

I made this box for my wife's birthday, September 2002.  Dimensions are approximately 6" x 9" x 2.5".

It is constructed of recycled old growth fir (lighter part) and mahogany (darker portion).  The tray and inset dividers are constructed of mahogany as well.  The bottom of the box is oak plywood (fir didn't look quite right).

No stain was used in the finish, just lacquer.  The darker streaks you see in the fir is due to the patina that has accumulated over the years.

Notice on the ends the double-dovetail I cut using my Incra jig.  This is what gives the joint the inlay look.  The mahogany actual goes all the way through the entire joint and is one piece.  Glue-up for the box required 4 separate clamping times.

Hardest part of this project?  Believe or not, it was the hinges.  They are low quality Stanley hinges, and they just did not want to work properly.

Total time spent on project:  Approximately 14 hours.
